Last September 16, 2017, high school students from Xavier School San Juan attended a forum in UP Diliman entitled “Never Forget, Never Again.” Hosted by the UP College of Mass Communications Interdependent Student-Centered Activism (UP-CMC-ISA) in commemoration of Martial Law, the forum aimed to shed light on the events of the past, as well as more recent events regarding the upholding of human rights in the Philippines. The event included talks about the Martial Law years, human rights, and what the youth can do today to propagate freedom and nationalism. After the forum, UP-CMC-ISA held contests for essay writing and poster making, all in line with the theme “Never Again.”

Along with high school students from various other schools in Metro Manila, the representatives from Xavier School competed individually in the contests. The representatives from Xavier School were Ervin De Las Peñas (12J), Matthew So (12C), and Stephen Zagala (10D) for the essay writing contest, and Pablo Casanova (12B), Joaquin Tieng (12E), and Shane Soon (10E) for the poster making contest.

These Xaverians are proud to have garnered two awards, one from each contest. Congratulations to Pablo Casanova of 12B for winning second place in the poster making contest, and to Stephen Zagala of 10D for winning first place in the essay writing contest. Their pieces will be displayed at Plaridel Hall in UP Diliman until September 22, 2017.
